America:In 1985, FDA confirmed that L-theanine is generally recognized as safe for use in foods, in unlimited quantities

China:In 2014, China's Ministry of Health approved tea L-theanine as New Resource Food. The scope of use does not include infant food. Daily dosage is no more than 400 mg/day.

Other countries and areas:L-theanine is approved by the Codex Alimentarius Commission as flavor enhancer with no restrictions on dosage. China's Taiwan province and South Korea have also approved L-theanine as food additive
