Akkermansia muciniphila is a gram-negative, non-motile, non-spore-forming, oval-shaped bacterial organism growing mostly in single cells or pairs, rarely in chains. It constitutes 3-5% of the human microbial community. It grows in the mucus layer of the intestinal tract and utilizes mucin secreted by the host as a carbon and nitrogen source, thus colonizing the intestinal tract and playing an important role in the protective effect of the intestinal barrier through competitive exclusion ^[1].
